WIRELESS BROADBAND INTERNET FOR BETONG

Published in Eastern Times, 27 July 2007

BETONG : Now Betong is connected to the rest of the world via the wireless broadband internet service offered by Danawa-Sacofa. Danawa-Sacofa implements a wifi system that covers a large area with one base-station, termed as Hotzones. The wireless internet broadband access is currently available in Betong Town Proper and covers a new Betong State Government Complex and SMK Datuk Patinggi Kedit. The coverage will subsequently extended in Betong Division.

To subscribe, the users need to connect to deConnexion's access point and then register through www.deconnexion.com.my. After that, the web automatically allows users instant access to the internet. Users will enjoy unlimited always on broadband internet access anywhere within deConnexion networks.

The deConnexion wifi service is offered by Danawa-Sacofa joint venture company. Danawa Resources Sdn. Bhd. is a nationwide telecommunication service provider in Malaysia and Sacofa Sdn. Bhd. is state owned telecommunication infrastructure company. Danawa-Sacofa was set up to fulfill our Chiefl Minister, Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud's vision to elevate Sarawak status to a well connected K-economy and K-society.

Danawa-Sacofa targets Sarawak's household broadband penetration rate to treach 50% by 2009. In an effort to encourage subscription to the usage of wifi in the state, Danawa-Sacofa is offering deConnexion wifi service for free for a period of two years. It is anticipated than the initial offering of free service for the two years will encourage more users to access the Internet, especially in the rural areas; thus bringing the digital divide.

The internet local service covers major cities and towns and stretches to rural areas to focus on rural schools and local community centres. Its extensive rollout plan is implemented in phases. The pilot project in Miri was launched successfully earlier this year. Subsequently, deConnexion was launched in Sibu by Urban Development and Tourism Minister, Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh and received positive response from both local press and the public. Deconnexion is also available in Mukah and rollout is currently underway for Tanjung Manis and the Baligian-Oya-Dayat-Matu-Daro-Igan-Kut-Kpg Bruit-Semop-Belawai area.
