SABAH, SARAWAK FORM PANELS TO BRIDGE RURAL DIGITAL GAP

Published in DAILY EXPRESS, 1 June 2008.
JULAU: Sabah and Sarawak are to form their own committees to deal with the digital divide problem in their respective rural areas.
Deputy Minister of Energy, Water and Communications Datuk Joseph Salang said he would head both committees to comprise Members of Parliament from both states.
"Our mission is to narrow the digital gap for the sake of our rural populace. The Government is very serious about this and wants it to move fast.
"We will be joined by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and all the industry players who will be called to give briefings and advice to the Government on how best to implement this," he said here Saturday.
Salang had last evening launched the "deConnexion", a rural Internet connectivity project, at the community hall here.
The State initiative is implemented by DANAWA (Dynamic Applied Network and Wireless Applications) Resources Sdn Bhd and SACOFA Sdn Bhd, a telecommunications common facilities and fibre optic backbone infrastructure provider.
Julau town and all the government departments, three schools and two longhouses are now connected to the Internet under the project.
On another issue, Salang said the Universal Provider Service fund with MCMC had now stood at RM3 billion.
"I need to discuss with both committees, MCMC and all industry players including DANAWA and SACOFA on how best to use the fund.- Bernama
