Sibu Town to provide security for the people

SIBU: A town safe from crimes.

This will be Sibu Town when the Sibu Municipal Council installs a surveillance CCTV system that helps monitor crimes. Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) is working with two private companies to provide such safety for the people.

The MoU was signed yesterday between SMC and the two companies - Danawa Resources Sdn Bhd and Pansar Computer Service Sdn Bhd - to implement pilot CCTV project.

Pansar announced, after the signing of the pact, that they had already fixed a CCTV set at their building at Jalan Bengkel to overlook the traffic at Jalan Channel. When the system is fully implemented, it will have the capability to catch drivers who are not wearing seat belts, or talking on the handphones while driving and the system will also be on the lookout for crimes like car theft, robbery, snatching and other matters in crime-prone areas.

The project is the initiative of the council, it will be one of the first in Sarawak. It will be supported by high speed broadband for "live-feed data that will be transmitted to its control room".

A press statement, given out by Danawa Resources, said the town would greatly benefit from the project because of its effective surveillance.

"The system can also help to detect traffic congestion, notice accident, locate stolen cars and read registration plates of cars that cause traffic offence," said the statement.

Danawa Resources is the provider of the deConnexion broadband service, the latter of which is a project driven by the Sarawak government to bridge the digital divide through statewide high speed wireless connectivity to both urban and rural areas.
